In our times of globally resurgent authoritarianism and instability Artists at Risk (AR) - A European Network of Safe Havens (AR-ENSH) was initiated as a European-level response to the growing crisis of freedom of expression and the persecution of artists around the world.
Artists at Risk (AR) was conceived with the ambitious, long-term vision to create a type of “PEN for all artforms plus residencies”. PEN International was founded over a hundred years ago to defend the rights of writers, but AR would have an expanded focus on arts of all disciplines.
AR-ENSH together with overlapping AR-Networks, helped us achieve this highly ambitious objective at a level, speed and capacity far beyond expectations. Bringing together Art Veda in Tunis, CCCB-Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona in cooperation with AR-Barcelona lead by No Callarem, ZKM – Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe, and Artists at Risk (AR)’s AR-Safe Haven Helsinki, AR-ENSH is a cooperation project co-funded by Creative Europe programme of the European Union. AR-ENSH became a key part of the AR-Network coordinated by Perpetuum Mobile (PM).
The 7-hour livestream #RiskandRebellion from G-Livelab in Helsinki in 2021 kicked off the project with performances, exhibitions, panels, talks and music from the “movements of the squares” which had stood up for freedom and justice since 2011. Over a dozen such movements were represented, including renowned figures commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution, and the 20th anniversary of the World Social Forum.
The second symposium Institutions and Resistance - Alliances for Art at Risk at the ZKM in Karlsruhe in 2022 laid the foundations for the future. This two-day hybrid event uniting all partners had an eerily prophetic subtitle: “Where would you go, if the world fell apart?” Two weeks later Russia began its brutal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The picture of a peaceful Europe was shattered. The director of ZKM Peter Weibl, who has sadly left us since, maintained that “every art institution should have a department of artists at risk”. By the end of the year, with the crush of incoming refugees, and the exponential development of solidarity networks and AR’s digital and hosting infrastructures, this had become reality. Artists at Risk (AR) became the “go to” organisation for artists under threat.
The third major conference Creative Resilience: Self-Censorship and Artistic Expression in Tunisia’s Challenging Landscape was organised by Art Veda in Tunis in 2023. It came shortly before the draconian crackdown on freedom of expression by the Tunisian government, making this a singular moment for dissident forces to realign their activities and face the threatening new environment with resilience and adaptability.
The Artists at Risk (AR) Pavilion. Artists. Risks. Humans. Rights. on the occasion of the Venice Biennale at UNESCO’s Palazzo Zorzi, provided a venue for a culminating exhibition for the project. Speakers in the discursive programme included artists and activists, NGOs, ministers and foundations. It was a landmark event in the field at the intersection of human rights and the arts.
The annual “Orwell Days” at the CCCB provided a significant human-rights related context for several AR-ENSH activities throughout the project period. This included readings, screenings and premieres of internationally-renowned AR-Residents from Belarus and Ukraine and Iran. It also was the forum for the final discursive programme of AR-ENSH, including the likes of Pussy Riot and Hito Steyerl, and carrying on the important legacy of Orwell in the city where he had fought rising authoritarianism.
AR-ENSH artists-in-residence represented disciplines from visual art, theatre and cinema to urban art. Countries of origin included Iran, Sudan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. Pethia promised her father that she would get married in Aleppo. No matter what the circumstances. Her father loved the city. A city effaced by years of a brutal war, a tragedy only compounded by a terrible earthquake. So she and her husband Arthur decided to celebrate their wedding in Aleppo, on the ruins of the old city – a sign of a “new beginning”.

Nikita Kravtsov would like us to imagine Venice burning. What if, like his city Kyiv, the Most Serene Republic went up in smoke. This large-format work, created for the exhibition in UNESCO’s Palazzo Zorzi with its seven-meter ceilings and panels for heavily-framed grandmasters, Kravtsov proceeded in a humble fashion: with a durational monotone marker, which according to the artist, will slowly fade in the sunshine, like a city disappearing.

Le Bas's maps transcend the scientific and pedagogical materials which delineate towns, cities and countries, uniting them in the reality of transnational Roma life. This work was painted on a map of the Nordic region used in geography classes in a Malmö school. “1000 years of refugees, why are we always outsiders?” it says, indicating the fact that Traveller and Gypsy communities often have faced forced migration, making them “outsiders everywhere”. (N.B. The term “Gypsy” is used in a positive way exclusively by English Roma communities, but is often considered racist when used by non-Roma.) However, at the same time, they have often learned to overcome borders, making them at home across continents.
Thousand Years Refugees was commissioned as part of the “Outside Insiders” project by Perpetuum Mobile (PM), which took place at the Moderna Museet in Malmö in 2014.

Based on a life lived between home and exile, war and peace, a lost past and an uncertain future, we find in Saddam Jumaily’s work a striking painterly universe in which domesticity and the cruel reality of the world merge into one absurd whole.

In the circular mosaic-ceramic sculpture Whale – Borders 1, the interplay of shape, textures, surfaces and depths invites profound contemplation. Created in Tunis, on the southern coast of the Mediterranean, the shape of a rescue-ring speaks volumes about the hopes and fears of those fleeing the African continent. The war in Sudan, where the artist is from, is experiencing the worst refugee crisis of our time, worldwide, with over eight million refugees and internally displaced persons. Despite or because of this vastness verging on the sublime, the aesthetic beauty of the works also gives us the gift of the freedom of imagination, blurring the lines between perception and reality, as it unveils the fluidity of existence through abstract forms and symbolic motifs.

Through this performance invoked in Kurdish poetry, Bariş Seyitvan reflects on the silent pain experienced by the Kurdish people of Afrin through the symbol and life of the olive tree.
The Hebrews called the olive tree zayit, the Cretans called it erawa, the Greeks called it elaia. The Romans called it olea and oliva, and some speak of vivax oliva, the lively olive, reflecting its incredible longevity. In their footsteps, the Arabs called it zaytun, and the French and the British called it olive. This immortal tree, which has existed for over 6000 years in Anatolia and Mesopotamia, is mentioned in holy books, in blessings and temples. It is the subject of legends.
It is said that after the Great Flood a white dove, an olive branch in its beak, flew to Noah's ark on the high waters. The olive branch was a symbol of life after destruction, whereby God extended his hand of peace and forgiveness.
Under the perversely entitled "Operation Olive Branch", the city and region of Afrin in Rojava met the opposite fate in 2018. The Turkish army invaded with force, wreaking brutal destruction, sexual violence and death. Tens of thousands of civilians were killed. Schools and hospitals were bombed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated that around 300,000 Kurdish people were forced to flee. In their place, Turkey moved in a new population: former members of ISIS, with which it collaborated, and other Arab populations from the Syrian wars. This is a process known as ethnic cleansing.
As a result of this operation and occupation, olive trees, which were valued and loved by the people living in Afrin as much as their children and were also their source of income, were cut down by the Turkish state army. Many were burned and countless thousand more were stolen to be planted in Turkey. While those who had to flee Afrin experienced the great pain of expulsion, the families remaining in Afrin also experienced this secret pain.
Just as the flourishing of human life requires sensitivity, olive trees require care. Although it takes 2-3 years for it to become a sapling, it can be planted later. It does not grow in every soil, it needs a warm climate, but can withstand cold spells of -7 degrees celsius. While it takes 15 years before one can collect olives from an olive tree, a single tree can provide 1000 years of olives. For this elixir of eternity, it is necessary to first extend the olive branch to nature and make peace.

Blurring the lines between perception and reality as it unveils the fluidity of existence through using the actual clothes of migrants, some tragically destined to die crossing the dark waters, but also in the beauty of its abstract forms and symbolic motifs.

Pethia promised her father that she would get married in Aleppo. No matter what the circumstances. Her father loved the city. A city effaced by years of a brutal war, a tragedy only compounded by a terrible earthquake. So she and her husband Arthur decided to celebrate their wedding in Aleppo, on the ruins of the old city – a sign of a “new beginning”.

Through this performance invoked in Kurdish poetry, Bariş Seyitvan reflects on the silent pain experienced by the Kurdish people of Afrin through the symbol and life of the olive tree.
The Hebrews called the olive tree zayit, the Cretans called it erawa, the Greeks called it elaia. The Romans called it olea and oliva, and some speak of vivax oliva, the lively olive, reflecting its incredible longevity. In their footsteps, the Arabs called it zaytun, and the French and the British called it olive. This immortal tree, which has existed for over 6000 years in Anatolia and Mesopotamia, is mentioned in holy books, in blessings and temples. It is the subject of legends.
It is said that after the Great Flood a white dove, an olive branch in its beak, flew to Noah's ark on the high waters. The olive branch was a symbol of life after destruction, whereby God extended his hand of peace and forgiveness.
Under the perversely entitled "Operation Olive Branch", the city and region of Afrin in Rojava met the opposite fate in 2018. The Turkish army invaded with force, wreaking brutal destruction, sexual violence and death. Tens of thousands of civilians were killed. Schools and hospitals were bombed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated that around 300,000 Kurdish people were forced to flee. In their place, Turkey moved in a new population: former members of ISIS, with which it collaborated, and other Arab populations from the Syrian wars. This is a process known as ethnic cleansing.
As a result of this operation and occupation, olive trees, which were valued and loved by the people living in Afrin as much as their children and were also their source of income, were cut down by the Turkish state army. Many were burned and countless thousand more were stolen to be planted in Turkey. While those who had to flee Afrin experienced the great pain of expulsion, the families remaining in Afrin also experienced this secret pain.
Just as the flourishing of human life requires sensitivity, olive trees require care. Although it takes 2-3 years for it to become a sapling, it can be planted later. It does not grow in every soil, it needs a warm climate, but can withstand cold spells of -7 degrees celsius. While it takes 15 years before one can collect olives from an olive tree, a single tree can provide 1000 years of olives. For this elixir of eternity, it is necessary to first extend the olive branch to nature and make peace.

In the circular mosaic-ceramic sculpture Whale – Borders 1, the interplay of shape, textures, surfaces and depths invites profound contemplation. Created in Tunis, on the southern coast of the Mediterranean, the shape of a rescue-ring speaks volumes about the hopes and fears of those fleeing the African continent. The war in Sudan, where the artist is from, is experiencing the worst refugee crisis of our time, worldwide, with over eight million refugees and internally displaced persons. Despite or because of this vastness verging on the sublime, the aesthetic beauty of the works also gives us the gift of the freedom of imagination, blurring the lines between perception and reality, as it unveils the fluidity of existence through abstract forms and symbolic motifs.

In the circular ceramic sculptures Whale – Borders 2, the interplay of textiles of clothes and fabrics used by migrants invites contemplation. Like its counterpart, Borders 1, it was created in Tunis, on the southern coast of the Mediterranean, and the shape of a rescue-ring speaks volumes about the hopes and fears of those fleeing the African continent. The war in Sudan, where the artist is from, is experiencing the worst refugee crisis of our time, worldwide, with over eight million refugees and internally displaced persons. Blurring the lines between perception and reality as it unveils the fluidity of existence through using the actual clothes of migrants, some tragically destined to die crossing the dark waters, but also in the beauty of its abstract forms and symbolic motifs.

Nikita Kravtsov would like us to imagine Venice burning. What if, like his city Kyiv, the Most Serene Republic went up in smoke. This large-format work, created for the exhibition in UNESCO’s Palazzo Zorzi with its seven-meter ceilings and panels for heavily-framed grandmasters, Kravtsov proceeded in a humble fashion: with a durational monotone marker, which according to the artist, will slowly fade in the sunshine, like a city disappearing.

While hand-sewn textiles traditionally have a relationship to female domesticity, Kholod Hawash’s vibrant appliqué textile works literally sew images of liberation, protest and freedom from oppression into a colourful patchwork quilt. ‘Paradise Keys’ draws attention to the oppression of and violence against women in Hawash’s native Iraq and the wider Middle East. The relation of this traditional technique, passed on from mother to daughter, contrasts and revolts against the violence of the reality of female life in the region. By incorporating the demand for freedom into an ancient craft method traditionally used by women, Hawash’s art demonstrates a clear feminist message.

Damian Le Bas always set Roma people in a life-affirming light, with vigorous, dynamic and inquisitive and informative images, rather than repeating the depressed stereotypes. Frequent motifs consisted of emotionally radiant and intelligent faces with eyes painted in his uniquely alluring manner. These are people whose history and mutual solidarity stretches across borders and continents. Many of Le Bas’ later works were painted on maps of all kinds. This work was painted on a map of Berlin found on the street, hung on a wall, and then gifted to the artist to create this work.

Is this a fair game? Considering his disturbing past in Iraq and his uprooting from one location to another, a surreal nostalgia for places and objects of different temporalities infuses the artist’s work. The chaos and confusion of his subjects reflect the harshness contracts of reality in his home region embroiled in decades of regional turmoil.

Aws Al-Zubaïdy
Performer and director, Verscio/Bethlehem
Aws Al-Zubaïdy (b.1993, Bethlehem, Palestine) is a Palestinian performer and director currently living in Verscio, Switzerland.
Al-Zubaïdy's journey began in Palestine, where he graduated from the Drama Academy Ramallah in a joint programme with the German Folkwang University for the Arts (Essen). To further enrich his skills on the stage, Al-Zubaïdy pursued acting at the Tunisian National Theater during his Artists at Risk (AR)-Residency at Art Veda in 2021. This experience marked a significant milestone in Al-Zubaïdy's career, contributing to his growth both as an actor and director.
Al-Zubaïdy's work in theatre crosses borders, with performances and productions in Palestine, Germany, Jordan, Pakistan, Tunisia and Switzerland. His diverse cultural experiences have shaped his artistic sensibility. In 2024, Al-Zubaïdy received the award for best overall performance at Festival FUGA in Koper, Slovenia for a collaborative performance ‘Not Found’, commenting on the ongoing Palestinian genocide. He participated in an event dedicated to Artists at Risk (AR) at Schauspielhaus Zurich, and performed at the Artists at Risk Pavilion-Venice (2024).
Al-Zubaïdy aspires to create a bridge between his own theatrical traditions and contemporary performance practices. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in theatre at the Dimitri Theater Academy in Verscio, Switzerland, with a focus on the exploration and development of physical theatre, which he sees as an arena for research and exchange of theatrical experiences.
FO SHO
Ethiopian-Ukrainian hip-hop trio
FO SHO is an Ethiopian-Ukrainian hip-hop project created in early 2019 by three sisters – Betty, Miriam and Siona Endale. Born to Jewish-Ethiopian parents in Ukraine’s industrial Kharkiv, they grew up as Ukrainians in a Russian-speaking region. Their unique heritage has given them three major wars to contend with: the Tigray war on the borderlands between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the wars with Hamas and Hezbollah which members of their family are living through in Israel, and the Russian invasion and war with Ukraine.
Their unique cultural background is shown in their songs, style and energy-packed performances. Their music is a symbiosis of modern genres from trap to hip-hop with nods to R'n'B and soul, honouring their rich heritage and multiple traditions.
Fo Sho's performance of "BLCK SQR" has been described as “one of the most remarkable moments of the second semi-final in Ukraine’s Eurovision 2020 selection, attracting attention from both the audience and the jury.”
In 2022, they were exiled to Germany after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where, aside from doing music and touring, they are currently launching a new brand of original Ethiopian coffee.
Since their breakthrough success, they have been producing their new tracks for an upcoming debut album, often accompanied by professional-level, wild and quirky music-videos.

Since their breakthrough success, they have been producing their new tracks for an upcoming debut album, often accompanied by professional-level, wild and quirky music-videos.
Delaine Le Bas

Delaine Le Bas (b. 1965 Worthing, United Kingdom) is an artist who works across disciplines to create installations, performances, text and textile works, photography and film.
Le Bas studied at Central Saint Martins, London, going on to develop a wide-ranging practice, often going off the beaten track together with her late husband, the artist Damian Le Bas, Sr (also in this exhibition). As artists of English Gypsy (their preferred term) and Traveller backgrounds, their Romani heritage came to form a distinctive element in their art. They were among the 16 artists who participated in 'Paradise Lost', the first Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2007).
The Le Bas’ were Perpetuum Mobile (PM)-Residents in Helsinki in 2012, and helped to organise AR/PM’s Perpetual Romani Pavilion (Venice, 2009). Their large-scale works in public space under the title 'Safe European Home?' (2011–2017) were invited to prominent venues, such as in front of the Austrian Parliament (Vienna Festival, 2011) and also became the self-declared ‘4th Roma Pavilion’ in the absence of a Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2013 (Safe European Home? Berlin’, CHB, 2013). They also worked together to create the set and costume for the ground-breaking work of musical theatre ‘Roma Armee’ (Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin 2017).
Delaine Le Bas’ works were included in Gwangju Biennale (2012), Critical Contemplations at Tate Modern (2017), ANTI – Athens Biennale (2018). Le Bas participated as an artist in the Artists at Risk Pavilion-Helsinki (2019) as well as the Artists at Risk Pavilion-Venice (2024) with her installation and performance work 'Romani Embassy', which has been ongoing since 2015. In 2019, as part of Futuroma at Venice Biennale, she designed costumes for 'Rewitching Europe', creating a new installation and performance titled 'Witch Hunt III' which included an 8-meter tall 'Goddess' commissioned by Gorki Theater for the 4th Berliner Herbstsalon DE-HIEMAITZEIT! Le Bas was also one of the artists of 'The Crack Begins Within' at the Berlin Biennale (2020), creating 'St. Sara Kali George', a mixed media installation for 'The Storefront For Dissident Bodies'.
One of Le Bas’ most recent commissions was for 'Radical Landscapes' for Tate Liverpool in 2022. In 2023, she presented 'The House of Le Bas' at Whitechapel London and 'Incipit Vita Nova' was installed at Secession Vienna, which included a publication produced by Walther and Franz Konig with an essay by Stephen Ellcock. Also in 2023, 'This Is Not Carmen Or Valencia Orange' was performed for 'Popular' at IVAM Valencia curated by Pedro G. Romero and which includes her ongoing installations and performances from 'Witch Hunt'. A major presentation of her works was shown at Glasgow International at Tramway Glasgow (2024).

Aws Zubaïdy

Aws Al-Zubaïdy (b.1993) is a Palestinian performer and director currently living in Verscio, Switzerland.
Al-Zubaïdy's journey began in Palestine, where he graduated from the Drama Academy Ramallah in a joint programme with Folkwang University for the Arts in Essen, Germany. To further enrich his skills, Al-Zubaïdy underwent training in acting at the Tunisian National Theater, during his Artists at Risk (AR)-Residency at Art Veda. This experience marked a significant milestone in Al-Zubaïdy's career, contributing to his growth both as an actor and director.
Al-Zubaïdy's commitment to theatre has taken him across borders, with performances and direction in Palestine, Germany, Jordan, Pakistan, Tunisia and Switzerland. His diverse cultural experiences have shaped his artistic sensibility, allowing him to bring a unique perspective to each stage he treads.
Currently pursuing a master's degree in theatre at the Dimitri Theater Academy in Verscio, Switzerland, Al-Zubaïdy aspires to create a bridge between his own theatrical traditions and another new base. Focusing on the exploration and development of physical theatre, he sees it as an arena for research and exchange of theatrical experiences.

Bariş Seyitvan
Artist and curator, Berlin/Diyarbakir
Bariş Seyitvan is an independent Kurdish artist and curator from Diyarbakir, Turkey who currently lives in Berlin, Germany. His professional experience spans 20 years of work with arts organizations, individual artists and nonprofits. Seyitvan‘s focus is on contemporary art and migration in the Middle East. His work explores and reflects the trans-national reality of the global Kurdish community.
Seyitvan‘s exhibitions examine subjects that touch on history, ecology, geography and politics, as well as broader cultural themes of language, exile, gender and displacement, which have long dominated the Kurdish experience. He maintains relationships with a large number of Middle Eastern artists living in various parts of the world and organizes exhibitions in various cities globally.

A consequential account of societal prejudices resolutely appear as a mother ship accumulated with political, social, commercial, cultural and dogmatic religious travesty. Every system has loop holes. To be unboxed is not about radicalism.
Such a state is not to conveniently proscribe to moot points and affront to all that is not welcome. The mixing of round tower and thunder claps; flourishing as food cop and yet denying the deeds of corpocracy who stained all that was and is placing in power of kakistocracy all over. The cyber screamers, the hash taggers, with utmost focus on misogamy and denial of misandry; likewise as the list elongates, all these emerge as campaigns and the war decides whom to mitigate and whom to give refuge – the colour brand or the colourless.

Damian Le Bas

Damian Le Bas (1963 Sheffield, UK - 2017 Worthing, UK) established a diverse practice across textile, collage, painting and performance, consistently resisting categorization. After completing an MA at The Royal College of Art, London, he exhibited at various venues including Galerie Kai Dikhas, Berlin (2016), Kunstahalle Kallio, Helsinki (2012), the Venice Biennale (2007), the Prague Biennale (2007), documenta 15, Kassel (2022) and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2023).
Le Bas worked closely with Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin on numerous projects including artwork for a musical titled 'Roma Armee'. He collaborated with Delaine Le Bas to create 'Safe European Home?', a series of installations exhibited across Europe since 2011 that explore identity, migration and borders. Challenging stereotypes and marginalization, he initiated the Roma Biennale, dedicated to the art of Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and other communities and which came to fruition posthumously in Berlin in 2018.
Both Damian and his wife Delaine Le Bas were Artists at Risk (AR)-Residents in Helsinki and participated in the Perpetuum Gypsy/Roma Pavilion in Venice in 2009.

Towards the end of his colourful and momentous life, tragically cut short at the peak of his powers, Damian Le Bas (Sr.) became increasingly passionate about cartography. His works on maps symbolises the transnational nature of “Gypsyland”. Going beyond the realm of the Roma community, he presents us with the idea of the world as one inclusive entity.
Issa Touma

Issa Touma is a self-taught photographer and film director based in Aleppo, Syria. His work can be found in several international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and FOMU Museum in Antwerpen. His 2016 film, ‘9 Days - From My Window In Aleppo’ won Best Short Film at the European Film Awards, Best Short Film at the London Film Festival and the Tribute Award at the International Short Film Festival in New York. ‘9 Days - From My Window In Aleppo’ has been screened in over 60 festivals and about 50 cultural events around the world.
His 2017 film, ‘Greetings from Aleppo’ opened the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR). It won the DIG Award in Italy in 2017 and the DirectorsNL Award in the Netherlands in 2018. ‘Young in Aleppo’, his latest film, won the Jury Award at the Paris Short Film Awards in 2023. Issa Touma was also a World Press Photo Contest jury member in 2023 and a World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest winner in 2019.
Issa Touma was an Artists at Risk (AR) Resident, hosted in cooperation with HIAP at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki. Following his residency, he returned to Aleppo and reopened his gallery, the LePont Gallery for Contemporary Photography.

Kabul Cinema won the Ellen Award at the Aspen Film Festival in the USA, received a Special Mention of the Jury at the Hamburg Short Film Festival and was screened at many international festivals. Mirwais Rekab is the recipient of over 10 international film awards, including a Golden Globe for DOP of Osama, which was awarded the Best Foreign Language Film – Afghanistan.

Mirwais Rekab (1970 Kabul, Afghanistan) is a film director and cameraman. Rekab has worked on numerous film, television and music video projects. His film ‘Kabul Cinema’, won the Ellen Award at the Aspen Film Festival in the USA, received a Special Mention of the Jury at the Hamburg Short Film Festival and was screened at many international festivals. He is the recipient of over 10 international film awards. He was also first assistant director on the film ‘Osama’ by Siddiq Barmak, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and numerous awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Rekab was a cameraman to Atiq Rahimi on the film ‘Ash and Earth’, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and won an award.
After the completion of his baccalaureate in Kabul, Rekab started working at Afghan Films at the National Cinema Institute as an assistant cameraman in 1992 and worked his way up to cameraman. During these years, a tough civil war destroyed Kabul. Under the Taliban regime when all cinemas were completely banned, Rekab went into exile in Pakistan, where he lived as a refugee and made films for NGOs from 1996 to 2001. Just after the liberation of Kabul, in December 2001, he returned to Afghanistan and began to work at Afghan Films again. In 2003, Rekab established New Wave Cinema Collective intending to bring the school of thought from European new wave cinema to Afghanistan and provide high-quality video and audio services.
Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, Rekab again fled from Afghanistan and arrived in Berlin as an Artists at Risk (AR)-Resident. He currently lives in exile in Europe.

New commission for the Artists at Risk Pavilion – Venice
This new commission by Nikita Kravtsov represents a conceptual reworking of the famed twin paintings by Francisco Goya, La Maja Vestida and La maja desnuda. While, for Goya, hiding and privacy relates to nudity, Kravtsov portrays the fault line between the appearances of a calm world, and the reality of destruction, and the political mechanisms of hiding this truth and reality.
Nikita Kravtsov

Nikita Kravtsov (1988 Yalta, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian artist, born in Yalta. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv in 2010 and now lives and works in Paris. Since 2015, he has been collaborating with his partner Camille Sagnes under the name ‘TheTooth&TheRoot’. The duo has conceived numerous exhibitions in France and internationally. Their videos, installations, paintings and embroideries underline the nonsensical fate our society seems to be heading toward.
From the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Kravtsov has been very active in intervening on the streets to raise public awareness through murals, stencils, guerrilla advertising and more. In June 2022, he co-organized the highly acclaimed solidarity exhibition ‘Guerre’ at 59Rivoli, curated by Pierre Ponant.
Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo
Activist-poet and human rights defender, Kweke, Zimbabwe
Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo (b.1987, Kweke, Zimbabwe) is a human rights activist, poet and artist based in the mining town of Kwekwe in central Zimbabwe. Since his youth, his artistic work has challenged the status quo, condemning Zimbabwe’s oppressive government.
Moyo started writing poems at the age of eleven. His first poem, ‘Ndini Mari Ndakumedzai’ (Money, the root of all evil) was published by the Makonde Star. Ever since, Moyo’s poems, protest songs and writing have continued to advocate for human rights in Zimbabwe, and the application of the rule of law.
Moyo has written three works of non-fiction. The first was 'Robert Mugabe: From Freedom Fighter To The People’s Enemy' (2015) and the second followed soon afterwards, 'Zimbabwe: A Revolution Waiting To Happen' (2015). In 2016, Moyo gained international recognition, and notoriety with the regime, after sending Robert Mugabe a prison uniform marked ‘Crimes Against Humanity’ as a present for his 92nd birthday. Overconfident of his power, Mugabe opened the ‘gift’ on live-television, sparking a mass-media sensation. The artist fled the country, but was caught. In 2017, he released an album entitled 'Pisarema raNkosilathi' (Psalms of Nkosilathi). Moyo’s songs were played when Zimbabweans thronged the streets of Harare in November 2017 in protests against Mugabe’s dictatorship, a week before the president’s final fall. Despite this, Moyo remained the target of various militia groups in Zimbabwe. In order to escape punitive measures, Artists at Risk (AR) offered him a residency in Berlin in cooperation with SAVVY Contemporary. His third book, ‘Dismantling the System of Mugabeism’ (2018) was published during this first AR Residency.
Moyo has consistently challenged dictatorial rule in his country, and continues to denounce systematic human rights violations. Moyo’s activist practice includes youth work, and he is the co-founder and Director of the Zimbabwe Organization for Youth In Politics (Z.O.Y.P), a non-partisan organization seeking youth participation in electoral processes and citizenship rights defence. His activism has put him at risk again and again. He has been an Artists at Risk (AR)-Resident in Berlin, Helsinki and Ghana.

The "thought-backdrop" of this work evolves way back from my Masters in Visual Arts 2002 era where I was researching on "Animistic ritual art of Indigenous people concentrating on North East India." The reason, because of the inclusion of egg shells. These shells were used by medicine practitioner to read omens concerning well-being of the community and the result has to come out after breaking the shell where the placement appears either in convex or concave.

Romani Embassy, 2017

Romani Embassy is an ongoing installation and performance that began in 2015. Diplomatic representation is a key symbol of statehood, which Roma have never enjoyed. The reason is simple: they are a non-territorial people. Does a lack of territory really imply a lack of statehood? Why is there no permanent national Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale? These are the questions raised by this work. This sign and performance in the tradition of ‘art povera’ symbolises the lack of representation of the Romani people at many high tables. The Romani Embassy is simply wherever Delaine Le Bas or her colleagues hang the sign.
Saddam Jumaily
Artist, Helsinki/Basra
Saddam Jumaily (b. 1974, Iraq) is a painter and sculptor with a significant following in his home country of Iraq, where he is known for works that use symbolism to address memory and nostalgia.
From 1999–2000, Jumaily studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts (Painting) at Basra University College of Fine Arts, Iraq, where he also completed an MA. He later became a respected lecturer at the university, where his perspectives and art were highly valued by his students.
In 2010, Jumaily began to receive death threats from religious fundamentalist groups both from within the university and outside of it. He was accused and persecuted for purportedly advocating atheism. He was forced to leave Iraq for Jordan but returned a year later. After several incidents and deaths in his circle, he was forced to flee the country for Amman, Jordan, where he continued his artistic work under highly precarious circumstances. Following their Artists at Risk (AR)-Residencies, Saddam and his wife Kholod Hawash relocated to Finland.
Jumaily has showcased his works in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including the Artists at Risk Pavilion (Helsinki and Venice), the Sharjah Biennale (2023). As well as being an accomplished painter, sculptor and maker of art-books, Jumaily worked as a critic and editor for publications, newspapers and magazines in Arabic. Find his full CV on his website.
SaidAhmed Mohammed Alhassan
Visual artist, Tunis/Khartoum
SaidAhmed Mohammed Alhassan is a visual artist from Sudan who interweaves his background in engineering with fine art. His talent was first recognized when he clinched the award for the best graduation project at the College of Fine Arts and graduated with first class honours in 2016.
Currently residing in Tunisia, he immerses himself in artistic endeavours through an Artists at Risk (AR)-Residency at ArtVeda. Concurrently, he is pursuing a master's degree in animation at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Tunis. Through his art, SaidAhmed offers a unique lens to observe societal transformations. His portfolio encapsulates a diverse range of mediums and techniques, reflecting his creative versatility.
In 2014, SaidAhmed was awarded the golden prize at the Khartoum Mobile Cinema for an animated WhatsApp film which he designed scenes and illustrated for. In 2017, he showcased his works in a duo exhibition hosted at the Cultural French Center Khartoum. Some of his notable mosaic murals are 'Kordofan Culture' at El Obeid International Airport in 2018 and 'Utopia' at Khartoum in Sudan, sponsored by the Goethe-Institut in 2021.
He also participated in the "Art Meets Cultural Politics" project sponsored by the German Foreign Affairs Ministry in 2022 and shared his expertise in mosaic murals at various forums in Tunisia in 2023.

Heroes to some, monsters to others – Jidar, a new performance by Aws Al Zubaidi, explores the question: How do the crises we live through shape our identities? Tension between past and present, security and fear, create a frame under which theatrical language forms space, time and bodies. Without words, but with absurdity and humor, the performance pushes the limits of invisible walls. Central to the piece is the Palestinian Sunbird, a personal story about heritage and identity. It follows the search for a lost painting by the artist’s father, which is transformed into a larger metaphor for resistance against oppression, and the struggle for dignity and freedom. Performed by Aws Al Zubaidi with great intensity at the opening launch of the Artists at Risk Pavilion, Jidar offers a reflection on the fine line between heroism, monstrosity and normality, asking us to consider how our actions and experiences are seen through different eyes.
Suvadeep Das aka
Multi-disciplinary artist, Helsinki/Shillong Meghalaya
Suvadeep Das aka Suva is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Finland since 2009, who holds a Master of Arts in Live Arts and Performance Studies. He has performed at numerous live events in Finland such as LAPSody, Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP), Gallery Audusta and Pixelache Festival. Suva was an Immigré Artists (IA)-Resident hosted by Artists at Risk (AR)-Safe Haven Helsinki in 2021.
Suva’s creative process combines the body and material through fine arts, music and “bodily writing”, ultimately seeking not only to correlate visual art and performance but also to explore common grounds across differences concerning social, cultural and political issues. As such, the combination of his self-made instrument sculptures and Pyrography pieces focus on the aesthetics on display while also directing attention to harsh and yet often hidden issues of inequity trapped and perpetuated by border relations.
Suva frequently engages with various sound artists and musicians in different collaborative events.

The Cuban artist and political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara proposes to open his cell as part of the 15th Havana Biennial, allowing the public to see the work he has created while imprisoned in Guanajay. Otero Alcántara has spent over three years producing drawings that have yet to be shown to the public, reflecting on art, time, politics, and power relations.
With this project, Luis Manuel highlights “the unintentional creative synergy between the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) and the Ministry of Culture (Mincult). From cell to gallery, despite their intent, these institutions contribute to a curatorship they cannot escape.”1

Bariş Seyitvan
Artist and curator, Berlin/Diyarbakir
Bariş Seyitvan is an independent Kurdish artist and curator from Diyarbakir, Turkey who currently lives in Berlin, Germany. His professional experience spans 20 years of work with arts organizations, individual artists and nonprofits. Seyitvan‘s focus is on contemporary art and migration in the Middle East. His work explores and reflects the trans-national reality of the global Kurdish community.
Seyitvan‘s exhibitions examine subjects that touch on history, ecology, geography and politics, as well as broader cultural themes of language, exile, gender and displacement, which have long dominated the Kurdish experience. He maintains relationships with a large number of Middle Eastern artists living in various parts of the world and organizes exhibitions in various cities globally.

A consequential account of societal prejudices resolutely appear as a mother ship accumulated with political, social, commercial, cultural and dogmatic religious travesty. Every system has loop holes. To be unboxed is not about radicalism.
Such a state is not to conveniently proscribe to moot points and affront to all that is not welcome. The mixing of round tower and thunder claps; flourishing as food cop and yet denying the deeds of corpocracy who stained all that was and is placing in power of kakistocracy all over. The cyber screamers, the hash taggers, with utmost focus on misogamy and denial of misandry; likewise as the list elongates, all these emerge as campaigns and the war decides whom to mitigate and whom to give refuge – the colour brand or the colourless.
Damian Le Bas
Artist, Gypsyland/Worthing (1963–-2017)
Damian Le Bas (1963 Sheffield, UK - 2017 Worthing, UK) established a diverse practice across textile, collage, painting and performance, consistently resisting categorization. After completing an MA at The Royal College of Art, London, he exhibited at various venues including Galerie Kai Dikhas, Berlin (2016), Kunstahalle Kallio, Helsinki (2012), the Venice Biennale (2007), the Prague Biennale (2007), documenta 15, Kassel (2022) and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2023).
Le Bas worked closely with Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin on numerous projects including artwork for a musical titled 'Roma Armee'. He collaborated with Delaine Le Bas to create 'Safe European Home?', a series of installations exhibited across Europe since 2011 that explore identity, migration and borders. Challenging stereotypes and marginalization, he initiated the Roma Biennale, dedicated to the art of Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and other communities and which came to fruition posthumously in Berlin in 2018.
Both Damian and his wife Delaine Le Bas were Artists at Risk (AR)-Residents in Helsinki and participated in the Perpetuum Gypsy/Roma Pavilion in Venice in 2009.

Towards the end of his colourful and momentous life, tragically cut short at the peak of his powers, Damian Le Bas (Sr.) became increasingly passionate about cartography. His works on maps symbolises the transnational nature of “Gypsyland”. Going beyond the realm of the Roma community, he presents us with the idea of the world as one inclusive entity.
Issa Touma

Issa Touma is a self-taught photographer and film director based in Aleppo, Syria. His work can be found in several international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and FOMU Museum in Antwerpen. His 2016 film, ‘9 Days - From My Window In Aleppo’ won Best Short Film at the European Film Awards, Best Short Film at the London Film Festival and the Tribute Award at the International Short Film Festival in New York. ‘9 Days - From My Window In Aleppo’ has been screened in over 60 festivals and about 50 cultural events around the world.
His 2017 film, ‘Greetings from Aleppo’ opened the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR). It won the DIG Award in Italy in 2017 and the DirectorsNL Award in the Netherlands in 2018. ‘Young in Aleppo’, his latest film, won the Jury Award at the Paris Short Film Awards in 2023. Issa Touma was also a World Press Photo Contest jury member in 2023 and a World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest winner in 2019.
Issa Touma was an Artists at Risk (AR) Resident, hosted in cooperation with HIAP at AR-Safe Haven Helsinki. Following his residency, he returned to Aleppo and reopened his gallery, the LePont Gallery for Contemporary Photography.

Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara (Cuba, 1987) is a visual artist and activist. He is the general coordinator of the San Isidro Movement and co-founder of the cultural platform Museo de la Disidencia en Cuba (Museum of Dissent in Cuba). He was one of the main leaders of the "Cuban Artists Against Decree 349" campaign and one of the organizers of the #00Bienal in Havana. In 2021, he was recognized as one of Time Magazine's most influential people of the year, and in 2024, he was awarded the Rafto Prize. His work spans performance, sculpture, drawing, installation, and urban interventions, utilizing the body, public space, and elements of Cuban cultural heritage to challenge censorship, repression, and social inequalities. Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara redefines the role of the artist in contexts of oppression.
His work transcends the boundaries of art, becoming a platform for resistance, memory, and expression aimed at destabilizing power structures and encouraging civic participation. As a result of his artistic activism, Luis Manuel has been serving an unjust five-year prison sentence since July 11, 2021, in the Guanajay Maximum Security Prison, located in Artemisa province.

Mirwais Rekab (1970 Kabul, Afghanistan) is a film director and cameraman. Rekab has worked on numerous film, television and music video projects. His film ‘Kabul Cinema’, won the Ellen Award at the Aspen Film Festival in the USA, received a Special Mention of the Jury at the Hamburg Short Film Festival and was screened at many international festivals. He is the recipient of over 10 international film awards. He was also first assistant director on the film ‘Osama’ by Siddiq Barmak, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and numerous awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Rekab was a cameraman to Atiq Rahimi on the film ‘Ash and Earth’, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and won an award.
After the completion of his baccalaureate in Kabul, Rekab started working at Afghan Films at the National Cinema Institute as an assistant cameraman in 1992 and worked his way up to cameraman. During these years, a tough civil war destroyed Kabul. Under the Taliban regime when all cinemas were completely banned, Rekab went into exile in Pakistan, where he lived as a refugee and made films for NGOs from 1996 to 2001. Just after the liberation of Kabul, in December 2001, he returned to Afghanistan and began to work at Afghan Films again. In 2003, Rekab established New Wave Cinema Collective intending to bring the school of thought from European new wave cinema to Afghanistan and provide high-quality video and audio services.
Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, Rekab again fled from Afghanistan and arrived in Berlin as an Artists at Risk (AR)-Resident. He currently lives in exile in Europe.

This new commission by Nikita Kravtsov represents a conceptual reworking of the famed twin paintings by Francisco Goya, La Maja Vestida and La maja desnuda. While, for Goya, hiding and privacy relates to nudity, Kravtsov portrays the fault line between the appearances of a calm world, and the reality of destruction, and the political mechanisms of hiding this truth and reality.
Nikita Kravtsov
Artist, Paris/Kyiv
Nikita Kravtsov (1988 Yalta, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian artist, born in Yalta. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv in 2010 and now lives and works in Paris. Since 2015, he has been collaborating with his partner Camille Sagnes under the name ‘TheTooth&TheRoot’. The duo has conceived numerous exhibitions in France and internationally. Their videos, installations, paintings and embroideries underline the nonsensical fate our society seems to be heading toward.
From the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Kravtsov has been very active in intervening on the streets to raise public awareness through murals, stencils, guerrilla advertising and more. In June 2022, he co-organized the highly acclaimed solidarity exhibition ‘Guerre’ at 59Rivoli, curated by Pierre Ponant.
Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo
Activist-poet and human rights defender, Kweke, Zimbabwe
Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo (b.1987, Kweke, Zimbabwe) is a human rights activist, poet and artist based in the mining town of Kwekwe in central Zimbabwe. Since his youth, his artistic work has challenged the status quo, condemning Zimbabwe’s oppressive government.
Moyo started writing poems at the age of eleven. His first poem, ‘Ndini Mari Ndakumedzai’ (Money, the root of all evil) was published by the Makonde Star. Ever since, Moyo’s poems, protest songs and writing have continued to advocate for human rights in Zimbabwe, and the application of the rule of law.
Moyo has written three works of non-fiction. The first was 'Robert Mugabe: From Freedom Fighter To The People’s Enemy' (2015) and the second followed soon afterwards, 'Zimbabwe: A Revolution Waiting To Happen' (2015). In 2016, Moyo gained international recognition, and notoriety with the regime, after sending Robert Mugabe a prison uniform marked ‘Crimes Against Humanity’ as a present for his 92nd birthday. Overconfident of his power, Mugabe opened the ‘gift’ on live-television, sparking a mass-media sensation. The artist fled the country, but was caught. In 2017, he released an album entitled 'Pisarema raNkosilathi' (Psalms of Nkosilathi). Moyo’s songs were played when Zimbabweans thronged the streets of Harare in November 2017 in protests against Mugabe’s dictatorship, a week before the president’s final fall. Despite this, Moyo remained the target of various militia groups in Zimbabwe. In order to escape punitive measures, Artists at Risk (AR) offered him a residency in Berlin in cooperation with SAVVY Contemporary. His third book, ‘Dismantling the System of Mugabeism’ (2018) was published during this first AR Residency.
Moyo has consistently challenged dictatorial rule in his country, and continues to denounce systematic human rights violations. Moyo’s activist practice includes youth work, and he is the co-founder and Director of the Zimbabwe Organization for Youth In Politics (Z.O.Y.P), a non-partisan organization seeking youth participation in electoral processes and citizenship rights defence. His activism has put him at risk again and again. He has been an Artists at Risk (AR)-Resident in Berlin, Helsinki and Ghana.

Romani Embassy, 2017

Romani Embassy is an ongoing installation and performance that began in 2015. Diplomatic representation is a key symbol of statehood, which Roma have never enjoyed. The reason is simple: they are a non-territorial people. Does a lack of territory really imply a lack of statehood? Why is there no permanent national Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale? These are the questions raised by this work. This sign and performance in the tradition of ‘art povera’ symbolises the lack of representation of the Romani people at many high tables. The Romani Embassy is simply wherever Delaine Le Bas or her colleagues hang the sign.
Saddam Jumaily
Artist, Helsinki/Basra
Saddam Jumaily (b. 1974, Iraq) is a painter and sculptor with a significant following in his home country of Iraq, where he is known for works that use symbolism to address memory and nostalgia.
From 1999–2000, Jumaily studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts (Painting) at Basra University College of Fine Arts, Iraq, where he also completed an MA. He later became a respected lecturer at the university, where his perspectives and art were highly valued by his students.
In 2010, Jumaily began to receive death threats from religious fundamentalist groups both from within the university and outside of it. He was accused and persecuted for purportedly advocating atheism. He was forced to leave Iraq for Jordan but returned a year later. After several incidents and deaths in his circle, he was forced to flee the country for Amman, Jordan, where he continued his artistic work under highly precarious circumstances. Following their Artists at Risk (AR)-Residencies, Saddam and his wife Kholod Hawash relocated to Finland.
Jumaily has showcased his works in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including the Artists at Risk Pavilion (Helsinki and Venice), the Sharjah Biennale (2023). As well as being an accomplished painter, sculptor and maker of art-books, Jumaily worked as a critic and editor for publications, newspapers and magazines in Arabic. Find his full CV on his website.
SaidAhmed Mohammed Alhassan
Visual artist, Tunis/Khartoum
SaidAhmed Mohammed Alhassan is a visual artist from Sudan who interweaves his background in engineering with fine art. His talent was first recognized when he clinched the award for the best graduation project at the College of Fine Arts and graduated with first class honours in 2016.
Currently residing in Tunisia, he immerses himself in artistic endeavours through an Artists at Risk (AR)-Residency at ArtVeda. Concurrently, he is pursuing a master's degree in animation at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Tunis. Through his art, SaidAhmed offers a unique lens to observe societal transformations. His portfolio encapsulates a diverse range of mediums and techniques, reflecting his creative versatility.
In 2014, SaidAhmed was awarded the golden prize at the Khartoum Mobile Cinema for an animated WhatsApp film which he designed scenes and illustrated for. In 2017, he showcased his works in a duo exhibition hosted at the Cultural French Center Khartoum. Some of his notable mosaic murals are 'Kordofan Culture' at El Obeid International Airport in 2018 and 'Utopia' at Khartoum in Sudan, sponsored by the Goethe-Institut in 2021.
He also participated in the "Art Meets Cultural Politics" project sponsored by the German Foreign Affairs Ministry in 2022 and shared his expertise in mosaic murals at various forums in Tunisia in 2023.

Heroes to some, monsters to others – Jidar, a new performance by Aws Al Zubaidi, explores the question: How do the crises we live through shape our identities? Tension between past and present, security and fear, create a frame under which theatrical language forms space, time and bodies. Without words, but with absurdity and humor, the performance pushes the limits of invisible walls. Central to the piece is the Palestinian Sunbird, a personal story about heritage and identity. It follows the search for a lost painting by the artist’s father, which is transformed into a larger metaphor for resistance against oppression, and the struggle for dignity and freedom. Performed by Aws Al Zubaidi with great intensity at the opening launch of the Artists at Risk Pavilion, Jidar offers a reflection on the fine line between heroism, monstrosity and normality, asking us to consider how our actions and experiences are seen through different eyes.

Aws Zubaïdy
Performer and director, Verscio/Bethlehem
Aws Al-Zubaïdy (b.1993) is a Palestinian performer and director currently living in Verscio, Switzerland.
Al-Zubaïdy's journey began in Palestine, where he graduated from the Drama Academy Ramallah in a joint programme with Folkwang University for the Arts in Essen, Germany. To further enrich his skills, Al-Zubaïdy underwent training in acting at the Tunisian National Theater, during his Artists at Risk (AR)-Residency at Art Veda. This experience marked a significant milestone in Al-Zubaïdy's career, contributing to his growth both as an actor and director.
Al-Zubaïdy's commitment to theatre has taken him across borders, with performances and direction in Palestine, Germany, Jordan, Pakistan, Tunisia and Switzerland. His diverse cultural experiences have shaped his artistic sensibility, allowing him to bring a unique perspective to each stage he treads.
Currently pursuing a master's degree in theatre at the Dimitri Theater Academy in Verscio, Switzerland, Al-Zubaïdy aspires to create a bridge between his own theatrical traditions and another new base. Focusing on the exploration and development of physical theatre, he sees it as an arena for research and exchange of theatrical experiences.

Suvadeep Das aka
Multi-disciplinary artist, Helsinki/Shillong Meghalaya
Suvadeep Das aka Suva is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Finland since 2009, who holds a Master of Arts in Live Arts and Performance Studies. He has performed at numerous live events in Finland such as LAPSody, Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP), Gallery Audusta and Pixelache Festival. Suva was an Immigré Artists (IA)-Resident hosted by Artists at Risk (AR)-Safe Haven Helsinki in 2021.
Suva’s creative process combines the body and material through fine arts, music and “bodily writing”, ultimately seeking not only to correlate visual art and performance but also to explore common grounds across differences concerning social, cultural and political issues. As such, the combination of his self-made instrument sculptures and Pyrography pieces focus on the aesthetics on display while also directing attention to harsh and yet often hidden issues of inequity trapped and perpetuated by border relations.
Suva frequently engages with various sound artists and musicians in different collaborative events.

Artists at Risk (AR) is operated by Perpetuum Mobile ry (PM), a nonprofit association at the intersection of human rights and the arts. Since 2013, AR has grown to become a truly mondial network supporting artists facing persecution, oppression, or fleeing conflict or terror. Artists at Risk (AR) is coordinated by the 15+ member AR-Secretariat anchored in Helsinki, with staff around the world. Following an outpouring of solidarity and growing international renown in past years, securing funding is once again a key challenge.

It is an honour to join you in opening the Artists at Risk Pavilion, organised with the support of the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme for Artists and Cultural Professionals.
UNESCO firmly believes in the fundamental contribution of artists to strengthening social cohesion, the resilience of communities and peacebuilding processes. Especially in emergency situations, people often turn to arts and culture to find solace, strength and a sense of belonging and solidarity. That is why ensuring decent working and living conditions for artists and cultural professionals is so vital.
Artists face tremendous challenges during crises. They often lose their income due to the suspension of cultural activities. They can also be directly targeted for their work, and have their physical integrity and freedom of artistic expression threatened. In many cases, they are forced to relocate abroad. And despite the gravity of threats that artists and cultural professionals often face, they remain largely invisible in international assistance programmes.
It is in this context that we are particularly proud to be supporting the work of the Finnish NGO Artists at Risk. Together, since 2022, we have been able to support 95 displaced Ukrainian artists to access artist residencies both within and outside Ukraine.
This support was notably made possible thanks to the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme, generously funded by the Kingdom of Norway, and the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund.
In line with the recommendations of the UNESCO report “Defending Creative Voices – Artists in Emergencies: Learning from the Safety of Journalists”, UNESCO is calling for the recognition of artists as a vulnerable group in need of priority humanitarian assistance in emergency situations.
This will be an important step towards the implementation of the historic 2022 MONDIACULT Declaration, which recognized culture as a global public good.
UNESCO stands ready to support its Member States in building stronger foundations for the international protection of artists at risk.

This edition of the AR-Pavilion holds particular significance as it marks the 10th anniversary of Artists at Risk (AR). AR has relocated over 850 (principal) artists and art professionals together with over 300 hosting partners (see statistics for 2022-2023 here) around the world in its first, intense decade.
